It Just Takes One.

One run. That’s all it takes to spark the confidence you need to push forward. It’s the run that breaks through the barrier, the one that helps you overcome the hump of getting back in shape and building fitness. That single run leads to many more, each one boosting your confidence and propelling you forward. So, embrace that feeling and run with it!

I recently started training again, aiming to break 3 hours in the marathon. Getting back into running after a long break is always tough. Normally, it takes me 2-3 weeks of consistent training before I begin to feel like I can truly build fitness again. But this time, the process has been slower—maybe it’s just the inevitable march of time. Regardless, it’s always that one good run that reignites the fire and lets me know I’m back in the game.

I refer to this initial phase is purely getting into shape. You have to get in shape before you can start building fitness. For me, it’s a feeling, a sense that can’t be captured entirely by pace or heart rate data—listening to your body is the gold standard. It’s that run that reminds you what you’re capable of, the one that tells you you’re ready to start pushing yourself again.

For months, I’ve been focusing on strength work in the gym, preparing my body for the miles ahead. I always tell my athletes that you need to be strong enough to handle the mileage before you start logging them.

But today, I finally had THE run. The one where you feel the rush, the euphoria, the sense that you could go harder and longer if you wanted to. I’m not race fit yet, but this run is a sign that fitness is coming. For those of you just starting out or returning after a long break, be patient. This moment comes with consistency, and when it does, you’ll know you’re ready to begin the real work!
