Establish Your Routine

You’ve taken the first step toward achieving your running goals by signing up with The Run Plan. Your goals are set, and you have your training macro in front of you. But for you to reach those goals, it’s up to you to make it happen on a daily basis. Now, it’s crucial to plan and establish your routine moving forward.

If you want to get the most out of your running, embrace the fact that results won’t come overnight. The secret, if there is one,  in running is consistency—daily, weekly, and monthly. You need to log the miles regularly and accept that progress requires doing it over and over again. Gains will only come with consistent training. Embrace this!

Establish your routine now to minimize obstacles and distractions that could disrupt your consistency. Set your weekly schedule, and make time to train and recover. Your macro outlines the key quality sessions and long runs leading up to your "A" race. If you have travel plans or frequently travel for work, the macro allows you to plan ahead.

You also have a weekly schedule outlining which days to complete your runs. Take the time to plan ahead. For example, if you have hill runs coming up, choose the hill you’ll use in advance. If it requires driving, plan for that now. Long runs also require careful thought. They can take hours, so consider water stops and the terrain. What does the session call for—flat and fast, or hilly?

If possible, try to run at the same time each day. Your body will adapt to the training more effectively, allowing for consistent recovery between sessions. The more planning you do now, the fewer distractions will pop up later.

As you begin your Run Plan, remember that preparation and consistency are essential. Plan your weeks and stick to your schedule. I promise you that the effort you invest now will pay off on race day!

Welcome to The Run Plan!
